Challenge

Flotek needed QR-code-based inventory receiving on their Field BOL despite lacking native support in their older JD Edwards tools release, requiring ERP Suites to design and implement a cost-effective workaround solution.

Results

ERP Suites enabled QR-code-based inventory receiving by customizing blanket PO releases and embedding QR codes in BI Publisher reports within FloTek’s existing JD Edwards environment, avoiding a tools upgrade while streamlining the process.

Background

FloTek Industries Inc., a specialty chemistry and data company, serves customers across industrial, commercial, and consumer markets. They provide their clients with performance-enhancing chemistry technology, and their products are shipped around the world. One of FloTek’s clients sought a shipping option that included a QR code to simplify the inventory receiving process.

The Challenge

Flotek’s customer requested a QR code on their Field BOL (bill of lading) so that when they
received a shipment, the product was received into inventory by a simple scan of the QR
code, instead of the more involved manual process that had previously been used. FloTek
was running on a Tools Release before 9.2.6.3 so they did not have QR Code support. How could a QR code be created without the supporting infrastructure of a compatible tools release? That’s where ERP Suites came in. We reviewed the situation and provided FloTek with three possible solutions, ultimately working closely together to select the most
cost-effective option.

  • Solution A called for a Tools Release upgrade, but this was rejected due to budgetary
    constraints.
  • Solution B sought to leverage BarTender label software for creating QR codes, but this proved unfeasible due to printing and version level incompatibility.
  • Solution C proposed to use ID Automation to provide components to enhance existing
    business applications with barcode technology.
Solution C was identified as the optimum solution. ERP Suites went to work on a complex,
multi-step process, ensuring all required components for the existing business applications were installed. The team continued the process with file placement and installation, rounds of testing, and validation with FloTek.

A Creative Solution

Let’s look at the answer in action:

FloTek receives a blanket purchase order at the beginning of the financial year from their
customers. ERP Suites customized the blanket PO Release so that three document types
could be created from that release. The QR code can be placed on the OD PO. The
supplier on the OD PO passes on the QR code on their BOL to the customer receiving the
product. Upon receipt of the BOL, the customer simply scans the QR code to receive the
product into inventory.

ERP Suites met the challenge and surpassed it, creating a new function in EnterpriseOne
embedded BI publisher reports, keeping FloTek’s costs flat and utilizing their existing Tools Release.
